There were more seat belt offences than mobile phones
Police say around 50 per cent more people have been caught not wearing seat belts as those fined for using their mobile phone whilst driving.
10,000 images have been collected by cameras using artificial intelligence over the past year, which capted 6,000 people breaking seat belt laws and 4,000 drivers using a phone.
Devon and Cornwall Police say a large proportion of those killed on its roads who were not wearing seat belts were aged 16 to 24.
The head of road safety for the force said it was shocked at the number of people, including children, found travelling in cars without belting up.
According to the RAC, drivers who don't qualify for an exemption to wearing a seat belt could be given an on-the-spot fine of £100.
Drivers responsible for children aged up to 14 could be fined for each child passenger who isn't wearing one.
Road safety experts are hoping upcoming legislation will make seat belt offences endorsable, meaning drivers could be given points or lose their licence.
