He has been seen around Exeter for years with his caravan and horse.
A Facebook post on John's page, which has more than 7,500 followers, says he passed away peacefully last night (Sunday 9th February).
It says he had been "feeling his age" and his health had been declining, but as "the proud man that he was did not want anyone to know".
John could often be seen with his traditional caravan on verges in and around Exeter, with his horse happily grazing.
He had written 3 books about his life and travels, the third being printed at the end of last year. He gave some of the profits to the World Horse Welfare Charity.
His horse Misty is now being looked after by a friend.
A justgiving page has been set up to fund his funeral and pay for the care of his animals.
