A lorry reportedly went across the central reservation and collided with a number of vehicles
A woman is in a critical condition, following a multi-vehicle crash on the A30 this morning [28 August]
It happened between Cheriton Bishop and Pathfinder Village just after 7.30am, when a lorry reportedly crashed across the central barrier into oncoming traffic.
The male driver of the HGV also sustained a serious leg injury and has been taken to the RD&E Hospital.
Police and highways officials are working to repair 250 metres of the barrier and say the road will remain closed in both directions until around 3.30pm. Officers are working to first open one lane westbound.
In a statement, police say the incident Involved three cars, a Ford Transit van, and a four-vehicle combination of a lorry towing a small and large trailer plus a caravan.
They added: "The female driver of the Ford Ka sustained multiple serious injuries and was airlifted to Derriford Hospital by air ambulance. The woman, in her 30s, remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition."
Diversions are in place westbound at Fingle Glen/Pathfinder and eastbound at Woodleigh junction, whilst motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible for the time being.
One lane will remain closed in both directions overnight for repairs to be made to a substantial stretch of damaged central reservation barrier.
