Eighty-two per cent of the research carried out by Exeter University has been rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.
The Research Excellence Framework is the first national evaluation in the UK since 2008, and looked at its impact on the economy and society.
The university was ranked particularly high for humanities and social sciences, and is overall the best in the south west.
