University study sheds light on menopause

A study involving Exeter University has helped shed new light on the menopause.... by looking at the lives of killer whales.

They're among just three species including humans whose females don't die soon after they stop reproducing.

The research found that the older female whales were useful to their relatives because of their knowledge of where to find food.

That suggests that perhaps human females also evolved to live beyond menopause because of the wisdom they could pass on to younger people.
