Fire crews attended incidents in Chumleigh and Plymtree

Drivers were rescued from floodwater in a pair of incidents in Devon overnight.

They were first called to Weaver Lane in Plymtree just before midnight last night [26 December], where the driver was “was unable to safely exit their vehicle due to the height of the water”.

In a statement, the fire service said: “After a difficult start due to the floodwater and location of the car, four crew members, dressed in water safety equipment, were able to wade over to the driver and take them back to dry land, unharmed.”

Then, this morning at 6am, a lorry and van became stranded at Leigh Cross near Chumleigh due to flood water and a fallen tree.

It took crews “some time to get to the vehicles and then create a safe path out of the water due to the fallen tree”, but they used specialist equipment to reach the occupants of both vehicles and take them safely to dry land unharmed.
