Alexander Cavalie Mercer commanded the G-Troop Royal Horse Artillery which famously repelled the French cavalry charges on June 18th 1815.
After retiring from the military he settled in Exeter, having spent a lot of time in Devon as a child.
He's buried in St David's Church.
