All-electric fleet on its way
Torbay will be the first place in Devon and Cornwall to operate all-electric buses.
A government funding boost of over £350,000 contributes to a total of over £7.4 million, enabling the rollout of 55 new zero-emission vehicles by summer 2026.
This landmark achievement will make Torbay one of the UK's few areas with a completely electric bus fleet operated by its main provider.
Stagecoach's Torquay depot on Regent Close will become the company's first net-zero facility.
The new, more comfortable buses are projected to save carbon emissions equivalent to taking 2,000 diesel cars off the road, significantly improving local air quality.
Cllr Adam Billings, Cabinet Member for Pride in Place and Parking for Torbay Council, said; "
“The new buses will be better to travel in and their lack of tailpipe emissions will contribute to improving air quality. This will particularly benefit our town centres as well as cyclists and pedestrians generally.
“Alongside the planned improvements to our bus services, the introduction of new routes, more frequent busses, better quality information and better quality bus stops, the new electric bus fleet will provide an improved public transport travel option while also reducing carbon emissions."
