Former England striker 'expected' to become manager

Former England and Manchester United star Wayne Rooney is being linked to the manager's job at Plymouth Argyle.

The football legend suffered a traumatic season in charge of Birmingham and was sacked in January.

He's said to have a close relationship with Argyle's director of football Neil Dewsnip from his time as a teenager at Everton's youth academy.

In an exclusive story on Friday morning, the Daily Telegraph says he's been approached for the job, and could have an interview for it next week.

Nevertheless the paper says he's expected to be appointed.

Argyle sacked manager Ian Foster towards the end of last season which saw them retain Championship status by the skin of their teeth on the last day of the campaign.

If he joins Plymouth, he won't have to face his last team. Birmingham were relegated to League One. But they'll still get a day out in Devon. They'll be facing Exeter City at some point.
