The local council is paying half the cost but the town has traditionally made up the rest of it from private donations.
The Exmouth Christmas Lights committee says it can pay for this year's illuminations, but after that the future's looking uncertain.
The committee says if each resident donates 10p, it would raise enough money to keep the town lit in festive lights next year.
