Union flags have also been seen

Councils across Devon have responded to an increase in St George's flags and markings.

England flags have appeared on zebra crossings and mini-roundabouts in Exeter, Exminster and Plymouth and Union flags have been seen on bridges over major roads.

Plymouth City Council has been removing flags it says are unsafe or unlawful and Torbay Council say taxpayers will fund the removal of red crosses on roads and street furniture.

The leader of Devon County Council has urged residents to seek permission before placing flags on public property.

Flags were first seen across the country to cheer on the Lionesses during the Women's Euros in July, but thousands more have appeared during August.

Some of the groups behind putting them up say they're motivated by pride and patriotism, whilst opponents say it feels provocative.
