Homes evacuated after police raid

Several homes in Plymouth have been evacuated and a cordon is in place following a police investigation.

The 100-metre security perimeter was established along College Avenue in Mutley, where officers executed a property warrant this morning (17 February).

During the search, a 26-year-old British man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm without a certificate. He remains in police custody.

Specialist teams, including an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, were called to the scene after further items requiring expert analysis were discovered inside the property.

Police have confirmed the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related and believe there is no wider risk to the public.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said:

"The cordon is in place for public safety and to allow suitable access for emergency services at the scene while this work is ongoing. We are unable to say how long the cordon will remain in place, but we will update the public when we have further information."

The public is advised to avoid the immediate vicinity of Mutley to minimise traffic disruption and allow specialist work to proceed without interference.
