An army of volunteers are to be recruited to help with minor maintenance work on Devon's roads.
They'll be nominated by town or parish councils and receive training to carry out jobs such as clearing weeds, cleaning signs and repairing small surface defects.
The county council says they won't replace its own staff and it'll continue to fix larger pot-holes and other road safety priorities.
Spending on highways has had to be cut because of reductions in Government funding.
