There's concern that large numbers of people in Devon are planning to run up debts in order to pay for Christmas.
A survey by the Government-funded Money Advice Service found that more than a third of respondents in the south west were planning to put the cost on their credit cards - and a small number intended to use payday loans.
Nationally a tenth of those questioned admitted that they still hadn't finished paying for last Christmas.
