The first official shelter for stray dogs in Afghanistan was founded by a Devon man who has won special recognition.
Pen Farthing from Tiverton won an award for his charity Nowzad at the star studded Animal Hero Awards last night.
A former Sergeant in the marines, Pen founded the first animal shelter in Afghanistan after being stationed there.
His original mission was to reunite frontline soldiers with the stray animals they had adopted on their tour of duty once they returned home.
He was handed the Special Recognition Award by Angela Rippon.
