East Devon council is stepping in to help rural homes and businesses which aren't included in the current roll-out of superfast broadband.
Around a tenth of the district's rural premises aren't covered by the Connecting Devon and Somerset broadband programme.
The district council says it's vital that the local economy isn't stifled by a lack of modern technology and that it will be applying for money from the Government's Broadband Innovation Fund.
The council has already had positive discussions with potential suppliers of an ultra-fast broadband network and says it will be submitting a detailed report which meets the criteria for funding to ensure that the project moves forward.
