Nightclub door staff could be issued with breathalysers to test drunken revellers - thanks to a project by Exeter University sociologists.
They've been assessing the benefits of the initiative when it's been used in other parts of Devon, and gained encouraging results.
It leads to less confrontation with door staff as drunk people are less likely to argue when they see the results of the test - and many people are cleared for entrance.
