Exeter's NHS Nightingale Hospital at Sowton is taking its first coronavirus patients.
Until now, the facility, built inside a former DIY store on the industrial estate, has cared for outpatients with other conditions. The 116-bed hospital was constructed within weeks at the start of the pandemic in the spring, but the first peak of the virus was contained at levels than meant south west hospitals were able to cope.
With the autumn spike continuing, the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital is said to be very busy. Staff were told on Tuesday that coronavirus cases would start being admitted to the NHS Nightingale Exeter on Thursday.
