£30 million regeneration includes amphitheatre
Plymouth’s newest performance space will be buzzing with two of the city’s most popular performers, as the Armada Way amphitheatre opens for the first time with a fun day for all the family on Saturday, August 9.
Finishing touches are being put to the outdoor theatre space, which is a major part of the first phase of the £30 million Armada Way regeneration project, which was officially opened by Plymouth City Council on Thursday (July 31).
The Amphitheatre Fun Day from 12 noon until 4pm will feature local musicians, The Busketeers, as well as Andy Quick, who has recently performed at Glastonbury Festival. There will also be children’s activities and street entertainers.
Andy is frontman for both Land of the Giants and the Andy Quick Band and is sure to get you dancing and toe tapping with his blend of musical styles ranging from blues to funk, hip-hop, ska and reggae.
Multi instrumentalists and talented singer/songwriters The Busketeers will be showing off their impressive musical skills.
Plymouth Theatre Company will be performing ever popular songs from the shows and Merlin the Wonder Woman Street Show will be bringing her box of tricks to keep little ones entertained.
Timings are as follows:
12pm – The Busketeers
1:30pm – Andy Quick Band
3pm – Plymouth Theatre Company performing songs from the musicals
1pm, 2:30pm, 3:30pm – Merlin, The Wonder Woman street show and hula hooping workshops.
12pm onwards – Karen Mills Face Painter
Speaking at the opening of the first phase of the Armada Way regeneration chief executive of the Plymouth City Centre Company Steve Hughes said the event on August 9 was “just the beginning” of plans to make Plymouth city centre a day and evening entertainment spot, and not just a retail space where people pack up at 5.30pm and go home.
Talks were taking place with Theatre Royal Plymouth who were “keen to get involved” and Plymouth Culture to have a programme of events through spring, summer and autumn.
The new look Armada Way, with 163 new trees, water features, cycle ways, seating, wildflower meadows and a huge children’s play area will open fully early summer next year once work is completed on the next two phases.
