Villagers near Crediton are being reassured that a giant pothole which has closed a local road will be filled in within the next few days.
The six-foot wide crater opened up in the road between Crediton and Newbuildings after the high water table forced mud and soft material to the surface.
Around 300 vehicles a day including school buses and delivery lorries have had to be diverted through the village of Sandford.
The mud has now been removed and the county council says repairs will be carried out to backfill the hole and reconstruct the road surface.
