Key new Paignton hotel opens

Mercure greets first customers. Ibis to follow.

The first of two key new hotels on Paignton seafront has opened at last.

Singapore-based Fragrance Group owns the building, which had been subject to delays after a key contractor got into difficulties during the pandemic, but now a four-star Mercure Hotel is greeting its first customers.

The art deco-inspired hotel which cost around £30 million, has 161 bedrooms, a glass-fronted restaurant and a two-tier Mediterranean style terrace with an outside bar. 

Jason Parry, general manager of the hotel said: “The Mercure Paignton Hotel is a hugely exciting project and one which promises a new age of prosperity for the area.

“Local relationships and partnerships are a huge priority for us, with 50 per cent of our beverages from local suppliers, and art displayed in our rooms and public areas created by the region’s artists. The hotel definitely has a local flavour and feel.” 

The Fragrance Group's Ibis Styles hotel is set to open on the seafront later this year, which together with the Mercure will employ around 60 people.
