He was driving a silver Vauxhall Astra which collided with a Seat heading in the opposite direction.
A woman from Ottery St Mary, a passenger in the Seat, remains in hospital after the two-car crash - she suffered life-threatening injuries but is now expected to make a recovery.
The driver of the Seat, a 49 year old man from Ottery St Mary, also suffered serious injuries.
Police are appealing for anyone who saw the Astra being driven erratically in that area at around midnight on Saturday night to contact them.
