The 54 year-old from Bovey Tracey went off the road on a steep bend on the A38 southbound near Halwood Forest and Exeter Racecourse and hit a tree.
The road was closed for much of the afternoon.
Police are asking for witnesses to the single-vehicle crash, which involved a white Ford Fiesta van.
