Ben Bradshaw is blaming Government funding policies for forcing the city's main hospital to go into deficit - in order to avoid compromising patient care.
The chairman of the Trust running the RD&E hospital, James Brent, has written to Mr Bradshaw, saying major savings have already been made in response to funding reductions.
He explained that his Board had to go into deficit to the tune of three point one million pounds to maintain a safe level of service to patients.
