An election wouldn't happen until 2027
Voting is underway in Plymouth as residents vote on whether they want a directly elected mayor.
More than 100 polling stations are open until 10pm at a cost of £400,000.
If residents vote in favour, the election wouldn't take place until May 2027, as the government works on legislation to scrap local mayors.
The roles would see the elected individual placed in charge of areas like transport, housing, skills and local infrastructure.
A result is expected in the early hours of Friday morning.
