Construction and refurbishment sites across Devon are being targeted by safety inspectors this month.
The Health and Safety Executive will be making unannounced visits to check that precautions are being taken to protect those involved in high risk activities such as working high above the ground.
They will also be looking for workers being exposed to dangerous substances such as asbestos.
The HSE say self-employed builders or small firms are often found to be breaching the legislation because they think the rules don't apply to them - and are urging them to look at the HSE website for guidance.
