Teenager cleared of Exmouth attempted murder

He had admitted choking and sexually assaulting the girl in the attack last October

A teenage boy has been cleared of the attempted murder of a 10-year-old girl in Exmouth last October.

Following a two week trial in Bristol Crown Court, the jury today reached a decision in relation to the 17-year-old male suspect in connection with a violent assault on a 10-year-old girl, which took place on October 4 in the Marley Road area of the town.

The jury found the suspect not guilty to the charge of attempted murder, and were unable to reach a majority decision in relation to the charge of rape, and choking with intention to commit rape.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had admitted choking and sexually assaulting the girl.

The prosecution now has seven days in which to decide if they wish to request a retrial in relation to the charges the jury were unable to reach a decision on.

He has been detained in custody and will be sentenced at a later date.

Police have reminded the public that the victim has anonymity for life and should not be named, neither should the suspect.
