Planes, trains and mobile libraries

Friday, 4 August 2023 - 23 minutes

We find out about the campaign to save our mobile libraries on this week’s Devoncast.

The county council last month voted to scrap the service, arguing it’s no longer value-for-money with three of its four vans needing replacing.

But opposition councillors against the cuts have managed to delay the plans. A petition to save the libraries has since been signed by more than 3,000 people and has received the backing of some famous authors.

Ollie Heptinstall speaks to Torridge Lib Dem councillor Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin, who’s behind the campaign.

Meanwhile, Guy Henderson looks into what the future might hold for the English Riviera Airshow.

It could be cut to a single day – with fewer aircraft taking part – as the bay’s council looks at ways of saving money on the aerial extravaganza.

Plus, in her debut appearance on Devoncast, our Plymouth and West Devon reporter Alison Stephenson tells us about the growing backlash to plans to close ticket offices across the county.

Many of Devon’s offices are used by more people than the national average.
