Stunning display at Sandy Park
Exeter Chiefs scored seven tries in a stunning display to get through to the Premiership cup semi- finals. It was a must-win match for Exeter if they were to progress in the tournament, and billed as a “winner takes all” showdown against their westcountry rivals.
Both sides paid tribute to Scotland international Doddie Weir before kick-off, following his death last week following a battle with motor neurone disease.
Then the match got off to a fiery start, with three tries within the first 15 minutes.
The Chiefs opened the scoring instantly, with Immaneul Feyi- Wabaso placing the ball down on the far side. A Gloucester try was instantly responded by the home team, as another try furthered the lead for the Chiefs. Exeter were looking sharp.
Although Gloucester dug deep and were rewarded with five points, the momentum from Exeter continued as they managed to score two well-deserved tries and achieved a try bonus point before half-time.
With the score going into the break being Chiefs 29 Gloucester 12, Sandy Park was delighted with the first half.
Early in the second half, Exeter flanker Rus Tuima ploughed through the Gloucester players to secure the fifth try of the match, the home side were out of reach for the travellers. This set the scene for the Chief’s journey in this match.
Even a Gloucester try, didn’t thwart Exeter’s dominance as hooker Dan Frost scored back-to-back tries. He vehemently weaved through the Gloucester players, and placed the ball down to score a spectacular try.
Gloucester managed to score two late tries but early success from Exeter made sure a comfortable seventeen-point lead separated the two sides at the referee’s whistle.
With the final score Exeter Chiefs 50 Gloucester Rugby 33, the Chiefs managed to top their group as well.
This now means Exeter finish top of pool 1 joined in the last four by Pool 2 winners Sale and Pool 3 leaders Northampton.
