A devon MP is today leading a debate in the commons on stalking.
Dr Sarah Wollaston, member for Totnes, wants a new stalking protection bill put in place. She says victims of stranger stalking are "left unprotected" under current laws.
The new legislation would include stalking protection orders which could lead to jail sent act of up to five years if breached.
Figures from Devon and Cornwall Police show an increase in reports of all type of stalking from 20 in 2012, to 102 in 2017.
Supt Stu Cavin from Devon and Cornwall Police is in favour of the new orders: "It fills that gap. It allows us very early in the investigation to issue a protection order to the offender that makes them aware of their behaviour, and gives us a real criminal sanction if they should breach that.
"In parallel with that is the investigation that will go along as well. It's a really good tool within the investigation process."
