Exeter MP calls for general election or new referendum

Ben Bradshaw's Exeter constituency voted 'remain' in the referendum

Brexit is a distraction to major issues facing country, claims Ben Bradshaw

Ben Bradshaw has called for a general election or people's vote after the resignation of foreign secretary Boris Johnson and Brexit secretary David Davis..

Exeter's Labour MP says too much government time is being wasted on Brexit - and that a general election or new referendum is the only sensible way of sorting the issues the country now faces.

Speaking in the House of Commons on Monday afternoon he says he believes the prime minister is a rational human being, and that she should put the idea of an EEA+ deal to a vote of MPs.  EEA is the European Economic Area, which embraces some countries that are not in the full European Union. The prime minister rejects that idea.

Mr Bradshw later told Radio Exe: "With so many imp challenges going unmet - from the NHS and social care to the economy that the only sensible way we're going to resolve this a general election or a people's vote on any deal that the government manages to cobble together."

Mr Bradshaw is a committed Remainer who is convinced Brexit is bad for Britain. His Exeter constituency was the only parliamentary area in Devon not to vote Leave in the 2016 referendum.
