MP welcomes water company's pledge to tackle sewage stench

The MP for Exeter says he's keeping up the pressure on South West Water over a stench of sewage near its Countess Wear plant.

The company has held a meeting with local residents explaining that the smell was caused by breakdowns of equipment there, which couldn't be mended quickly.

It says improvements to the plant will prevent any repeat of the problem - and has also offered five thousand pounds to the local community to try and make amends.

Ben Bradshaw says the money is a welcome gesture, but it's much more important that the company keeps its word to deal with the failings at that plant AND a nearby private pumping station.
