Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital on TV

It's the subject of a documentary tonight

Exeter's hospital is the subject of an hour and a half long documentary on Channel 5 tonight at 9pm.

The "Secret life of" series goes behind the scenes of airports, cruise ships and other services.

Producers Brinkworth said they wanted a big, busy hospital outside London and after meetings with the RD&E "they got the vision for it".

Observational filming, where the cameras run constantly, took place over 2 weeks. Producer Georgie Nicholson says "it produced a lot of footage. That's the nature of documentary filming is that it is very hard in the edit to figure out which bits you chose." She said "It's a big ask for someone who never goes in front of the camera to suddenly ask them to do their normal job, but let us be watching them with a camera in the corner. But the staff were fantastic at just letting us get on with it."

Sheila Guinchard is Lead Nurse and head of patient flow at the Royal Devon and Exeter and was filmed as part of the documentary. She said "It was quite interesting being filmed. It's not every day you have a camera crew following you round in your day to day job. And it was quite enlightening to see what the production team found interesting about the way a hospital works".

You can see The Secret life of the Hospital: Revealed, at 9pm tonight on Channel 5.
