£5,000 worth of equipment taken

Thieves have broken into a container at the South Devon Railway at Staverton, taking thousands of pounds worth of tools.

They say the break-in last week (Tuesday 27th November) will now impact on the winter works programme.

It's thought thieves broke in after cutting a padlock on the yard gate, then broke into the container next to the railways mess cabin.

Power tools, including two chainsaws, a Maxim impact wrench (worth £2,500), a rail disc cutter, portable grinder, Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), accessories for the main tools, along with a selection of hand tools and several Jerry cans and track greaser equipment were all taken.

Scratches suggest they tried to gain access in other areas but were unsuccessful.

The railway say there is also evidence of attempts to remove the hydraulic pipes and wiring from the track Tamper machine as well as other items from the Tamper. They also wrenched open the doors on one of the carriages.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on the non-emergency 101 number quoting crime reference number CR-110101-18.
