Who's painting out the double yellow lines?

A police office standing in Modbury could stop someone painting out the double yellow lines

"We'll put a copper there. No one will paint over them when a copper's standing there," says councillor

A vigilante has struck in South Devon and the result could be parking mayhem - and one councillor thinks putting a copper on the scene could stop the paint pot action.

The mystery criminal has taken to painting out double yellow lines in Modbury. Taxpayers are having to fund the cost of painting them back every time someone creeps along under cover of darkness and repaints the tarmac black.

Councillor Rufus Gilbert's told a meeting that it's becoming a frequent occurrence. He says: "In Modbury, have a problem where the yellow lines on Church Street keep being painted black. It has happened at least two or three times so they are not very popular."

Devon County Council officers said that they were aware of the incident and had been in touch with the police about it, but that without any actual witnesses to it happening, there was not a lot that could be done about it. Cllr Roger Croad says: “We could put a copper there, but they won’t stand there forever, and no-one is going to paint over the lines when the copper is standing there.”

Double yellow lines on the side of the road mean that no waiting is allowed at any stage. A police spokesman said that they had no record of a log for Modbury  that related to the issue.
