The popular and prolific Exmouth Art Group is busy preparing for another great exhibition, being held once again in the beautiful Ocean Suite at Ocean on Exmouth Seafront, displaying a wide range of artwork in all mediums and styles, and supporting the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
The annual event celebrates the vast array of skill and talent from the group’s members and this year will incorporate an additional display by Exmouth Ceramic Group, ensuring a wide variety of artwork is available to view and buy.
Doug Gilding, the Art Group’s President, says “we are delighted to be working with the new Ocean team to run this year’s exhibition; not only is the view from the Ocean Suite outstanding in itself, but the space allows a wide range of material to be shown; from established professional artists to folio work and, this year, pottery as well as 3D work, all well-priced - the Art Group only charge 20% commission paid on sales (to cover the cost of hiring Ocean) compared to the 40% - 50% commission charged commercially. A proportion of monies raised is always donated to charity and this year the Art Group is pleased to be supporting the MND Association.”
It is the tradition that the winner of the public vote in the previous year’s exhibition selects the beneficiary charity for the following year. Linda Bartlett won the public’s hearts in 2022 with her piece ‘Coastal Sunset’ and says, “as a self-taught artist, I have constant doubts as to whether my work is ‘good enough’. Winning the public vote in last years’ exhibition was amazing! It was a massive surprise for me and has encouraged me to continue painting and to try out new ideas.”
Linda has chosen MND Association as the charity that she would like to support this year, as she explains: “I lost a very close friend to this terrible disease a few years ago. As her condition deteriorated and her life became very difficult, I witnessed the help and support that she received from this charity. I sincerely hope this will continue to be available for all those who need it.” Linda has kindly donated an original piece of art as one of the prizes in the raffle which will no doubt attract additional ticket purchases.
The guest judge for this year’s exhibition is Anna Brewster. Anna is an expressive watercolour and mixed media artist who works and teaches at Umborne Bridge Studio in Colyton. She draws primarily with ink using reeds from the local river as dip pens. Her still life and land/seascapes can be found in local galleries, and she is also involved in organising Sidmouth Seafest. She says “I’m honoured to have been asked to be guest judge for the Autumn Exhibition this year. The heart of my teaching ethos is that art should be for everyone to make and enjoy – and Exmouth Art Group is such a vibrant and supportive group, producing amazing work”.
The Art Group Committee has invested in new technology for the exhibition, with a state-of-the-art till system which will make purchasing items at these events quicker and smoother, providing a better customer experience and reducing paper waste.
The 2nd floor bar will be open during 11am – 3pm each day of the event to enable visitors to linger for longer with tasty food and refreshing beverages.
The Art Group welcomes new members and has recently launched a refreshed website, with the facility to enable people to sign up for membership online. It also features a gallery where everyone can view examples of work by some of the members: https://www.exmouthartgroup.co.uk/
Doug is thrilled to see that the exhibition will feature an improved layout this year “which will increase the amount of screens from 28 to 30 to allow more artwork to be exhibited and improve the light and viewing experience.” Doug invites the Exmouth community, Devon residents, regular visitors and travellers from far and wide, and says “I hope you take the chance to visit the exhibition, enjoy the artwork, the view across the estuary to Dawlish and potentially pick up a well-priced piece to take away.” All visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite piece and to enter the raffle prize draw.
The exhibition runs from Friday 13 October to Thursday 26 October inclusive, 10am to 5pm, at Ocean (2nd floor, lift available).
