Roadside verges near Ottery St Mary will soon be blossoming with wild flowers... in a pilot scheme to turn them into wildlife habitats.
Next spring will see selected verges being sown with the seeds of plants which attract bees and butterflies.
It's a joint initiative between the county council and the Devon Wildlife Trust, after Ottery councillor Claire Wright suggested the idea to the Trust.
They say it's not an excuse for letting the verges get overgrown - in fact the plants chosen will inhibit the growth of grass, and the vegetation will be maintained at a certain height which won't block motorists' visibility.
