80 firefighters tackle pub fire

Jolly Sailor, Ogwell, in danger of collapse

A fire that started in a thatched roof of a pub near Newton Abbot has decimated the building overnight on Friday.

At its height, 80 firefighters from Newton Abbot, Torquay, Ashburton, Paignton, Bovey Tracey, Teignmouth were working on the fire, alongside the water carrier and aerial platform ladder from Torquay, the command unit from Totnes and the welfare unit from Ivybridge.

The building caught fire on Friday afternoon, with the alarm raised by a neighbour.

Around 8pm on Friday, fire crews were able to enter the building to salvage items of value, but they had to retreat to the outside again to continue fighting the fire because of the risk of building collapse.

By 10.30pm relief crews arrived from Modbury, Chagford, Tiverton, Plympton and Clyst St. George.

On Saturday morning, two fire crews were still on the scene.

Although the Jolly Sailor has been all but destroyed, neighbouring buildings have not been affected and no one is hurt.
