Neighbours were told views wouldn't be blocked

New home along the Torbay ring road at Paignton are to be built, despite angry objections from neighbours who were told their views would be protected.

Abacus/Deeley Freed want to construct up to 25 homes between Limekiln Close and the ring road at White Rock, close to the 373-homes Inglewood development which is already taking shape.

But residents say when they bought their properties they were assured no more houses would be built on the patch of land.

Members of the Torbay Council planning committee were recommended by officers to approve the plans, with a number of conditions. The application is in outline at this stage, and details will come later.

Homes would be detached, semi-detached and short terraces, the committee was told.

But objector Terry Graham-Watson, speaking on behalf of Limekiln Close residents, said: “We are absolutely aghast at this application.

“This piece of land has beautiful views and adjoins the woodland walk, which is why we all bought into it.

“Now we’re going to have to suffer another four years of construction right on our doorsteps. It’s completely unsustainable.”

And Cllr Adam Billings (Con, Churston with Galmpton) added: “Many people along Limekiln Close were sold their properties based on the fact that the land would be retained as a green space.

“They understandably feel very aggrieved.”

Deeley Freed director Andrew Maltby said the company is a "long-term investor" in Torbay and the houses are badly needed.

And, he said: “The neighbours were told by third-parties who did not control the land that it would never be built on.

“Those representations were false. They weren’t made by us. They were made by other parties who had no interest in the land.”

Members of the planning committee also passed a proposal for a new access road to the site despite more objections from people living nearby.
