Cruise ships mark Remembrance Sunday

Horns sounded at eleventh hour

Cruise liners off the South Devon coast sounded their horns at 11 a.m. on Sunday to start and end the traditional two-minute silence.

Holland America Line current has four vessels off Torbay and Teignbridge:  P the Zaandam, Nieuw Statendam, Westerdam and Volendam.

Other liners, including the Queen Mary 2, were attracting pleasure vessels into Lyme Bay and Torbay to see them. Those trips have been paused because of the new lockdown that goes on until at least 2 December.

Holland Line says: "Ships are currently carrying the minimum number of crew required to keep the vessel safe and operate in compliance with all nautical and environmental regulations. Pause locations are determined by a number of factors including best logistic location to be positioned for when we return to cruise, winter weather, available service options, travel options, and the number of vessels each location can accommodate. Next year the ships will be sailing itineraries around the world with destinations ranging from Europe to the Caribbean, Canada to the Panama Canal."
