Body unconnected to burglary

Man dies in Exeter doorway

A man believed to be in his forties has died in the doorway of an Exeter High Street building after being found by police investigating a burglary.

The two incidents are not linked and a man is in custody after being arrested on suspicious of breaking into the building.

Officers were called just before 7am on Saturday following reports of a burglary and tracked the suspect nearby. But whilst they were investigating that crime, they came across a man laying unconscious by a door. Although paramedics were called, they declared the man dead. His death is being treated as unexplained and enquires are ongoing to find his next of kin.

Detective Inspector Dave Pebworth, said: “At this time these two incidents are not being treated as linked and investigations remain ongoing into the circumstances of both matters. A small police cordon remains in place at the premises whilst officers carry out enquires at the scene.

“I’m keen to reassure the public that the small police presence at the scene of the incident will not impact Armed Forces Day in Exeter, today.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information should call police on 101 quoting log 193 of Saturday 22 June. Calls cost 15 pence.
