Campaigners welcome U-turn on River Clyst scheme

A controversial scheme to flood fields near Topsham to create a new wildlife habitat has been dropped - in a U-turn by the Environment Agency.

The news has been welcomed by delighted campaigners who've opposed the scheme for nine years.

They were concerned that allowing the river Clyst to burst its banks on the Topsham Flats would increase the flood risk on the nearby road.

They say around two million pounds of taxpayers' money has been wasted on a scheme that was never going to work - and which was being justified on the grounds of a 'theoretical' loss of habitat caused by predicted rising sea levels.
