Car crashes into Torquay wall

Masked driver flees

In pre-pandemic days, a masked driver fleeing the scene of a crash would have been hugely worrying. Now that mask-wearing is common and acceptable, it may be trickier for people to identify the offender, but police still need help with information from witnesses.

They're looking anyone who saw a man, wearing all black and a surgical face mask, who crashed a white BMW into a garden wall on Fore Street at  around 3pm on Saturday 4 July. He'd taken the car without the owner's consent, and after smashing it up in Fore Street, abandoned it and ran off towards Sutherland Drive.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or have any CCTV or dashcam footage of the area around the time of the incident, particularly around Fore Street and the Watcome shops roundabout, Medway Road and Sutherland Drive.

A 22-year-old man from Kingsteignton has been arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol, failing to stop after a collision, dangerous driving and taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent. He has been released on police bail until Saturday 25 July pending further enquiries.

Anyone with any information which could assist police enquiries is asked to contact police on 101 or email 101@dc.police.uk requesting to speak to PC Oliver Hill and quoting log number 468, 4/7/20.
