Carers in Devon are getting more parking tickets

More carers are getting parking tickets as they cannot find anywhere to park, councillors have claimed.

Councillor Julian Brazil, speaking at the South Hams Highways and Traffic Orders Committee on Friday said that he understood that more and more carers were being ticketed as places to park when visiting clients were scarce.

He said: “Particularly in places like Dartmouth and Kingsbridge were parking is limited, nurses and carers are finding it harder to find places to park and were being ticketed. As more and more care is being done at home, it is only going to get worse, so we should see if we can try and mitigate it as they are performing a crucial service and we need to help them.”

Councillor Jonathan Hawkins added: “This is an issue in Dartmouth and has been more of an issue since the hospital closed. I know of one family who had two carers at the same time and they simply couldn’t find anywhere to park around Market Square. This kind of thing is important to people who want to live at home, but if they cannot park, it is impossible for care in the community to be done properly.”
