Carthedral Green fire report published

Devon & Somerset Fire Service's investigation into devastating blaze can find no cause and concludes it was just "an exceptional and unfortunate incident". Hotel staff commended for ensuring guest safety.

It hasn't come to a conclusion about the cause of the devastating blaze, in which England's first hotel, the Royal Clarence, was lost.

The 50-page document  describes how fire crews initially fought a blaze from the outside of number 18 Cathedral Green, above an art gallery, whilst other officers searched rooms in the next door Royal Clarence Hotel, where initially not everyone was accounted for.

One of the crew "placed their hands against the adjoining wall of the bedroom which collapsed into number 18; the crews were faced with a wall of raging fire."

It went on for three days. The report says the fire spread through voids and spaces created by the age and proximity of the buildings - and that the actions of staff of the hotel ensured no guests were injured.
