Chiefs qualify for semi-finals

And Simmonds Snr makes history

Exeter Chiefs have confirmed their place in the Premiership play-offs once again after a dominant performance in a midweek league match.

They beat London Irish 31-12 in a compelling display in which they seem to be peaking at the right time as the regular season approaches its finale.

Number 8 Sam Simmonds entered the history books on Tuesday night. His hat-trick of tries saw him overtake become the Premiership's highest try scorer in a season, 19 tries with three games to go. It was his second trio of tries this season.

Little brother Joe converted three tries and scored one of his own. Tom O'Flaherty, who spent 10 minutes in the sin bin for an ill-time tip of an Irish player at one stage, also scored.

Almost 4,000 fans were allowed into the Brentford Community stadium to enjoy the game / experience more disappointment (Chiefs fans/ Irish fans respectively).

The win brought the full five points for Exeter.

With three games to go, Exeter sit in second place in the table, behind Bristol Bears. The battle now is to stay second, or move to the top of the table - increasingly challenging with so few matches left - to ensure a Sandy Park semi-final on 19 June.

Win that and they go to Twickenham a week later.
