The decision by Devon county council to stop funding school crossing patrols is being challenged by the Liberal Democrat councillors.
The service will be given to another provider and schools will have the choice of whether to pay for it themselves, organise volunteer patrols, or go without.
Immediately after the decision this morning, the Lib Dem councillors submitted a formal objection and called for further discussions on the impact on schools.
