Devon county council has announced this afternoon that all but two of its residential care homes will close.
It means 250 elderly residents will have to move into privately-run facilities.
A hundred jobs will also be lost.
Two specialist dementia centres will remain, in Torrington and Newton Abbot.
Meanwhile 17 day centres are also to close and others will be amalgamated.
