Councils set out benefits of devolution

New jobs, higher wages, more housing and better prospects for young people are being promised by Devon and Somerset's councils - IF they're granted the power, and the finances, to make more decisions locally.

A bid to the Government by councils and business leaders claims that by 2030 they could boost prosperity and productivity in the region, if they had the authority and the spending power.

They plan to improve transport links and broadband coverage, and offer all young people education, employment or training.

As well as economic benefits they're promising radical reforms to health and social care.

However questions have been raised over exactly how this would work without a major overhaul of the current system of local government and public services.
