East Devon District Council is warning residents not to give out bank details to hoax callers.
A local pensioner received from a call from someone claiming to be from the council, saying they had a refund for them thanks to a downward change in the council tax band on their property.
He was then asked for his bank details in order that money could be transferred to his account.
The council wants residents to be aware that these calls are not genuine.
